Bio

From the spring of her 2-year-old campaign in 1960 through her final race the following year, Bowl of Flowers was at the top of her class.

Bred and owned by Isabel Dodge Sloane’s Virginia-based Brookmeade Stable, Bowl of Flowers was a daughter of Sailor, winner of the Pimlico Special, out of the Alibhai mare Flower Bowl, winner of the Delaware and Ladies’ handicaps.

Trained by Elliot Burch, Bowl of Flowers won the National stallion Stakes, Frizette Stakes and Gardenia Stakes as a 2-year-old along with two allowance wins.

As a 3-year-old, Bowl of Flowers won the Acorn Stakes, Coaching Club American Oaks and Spinster Stakes. Her victory in the Spinster avenged a third-place effort in the Alabama behind winner Primonetta.

“It was her best race,” Burch said of the Spinster. “She just would not be beaten that day.”

Bowl of Flowers’ career came to an end because of a leg injury she suffered while training for a 4-year-old campaign. She was retired with a record of 10-3-3 from 16 starts and earnings of $398,504.

As a broodmare, Bowl of Flowers produced six named foals, including Grade 2 winner Spruce Bouquet.
