Travers Stakes preview Aug. 22

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame will present a Travers Stakes preview on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 11 a.m. The event is open to the public and included with a paid Museum admission. Brien Bouyea, the Museum’s Hall of Fame and Communications Director, and award-winning journalist and author Michael Veitch will analyze this year’s Travers field and take questions from the audience.


Bouyea joined the Museum in 2010 after five years as the executive sports editor of The Saratogian and The Pink Sheet. A recipient of several national and New York Associated Press journalism honors, Bouyea led The Pink Sheet’s Saratoga handicappers in wins twice during his tenure with the paper. He is the author of “Bare Knuckles and Saratoga Racing: The Remarkable Life of John Morrissey.”


Veitch covered thoroughbred racing for The Saratogian and The Pink Sheet from 1979 through 2017 and has authored two books on Saratoga Racing: “Foundations of Fame” and “Summit of Champions.” He has written for numerous publications, including Daily Racing Form, and is also a former Capital OTB-TV host. Veitch was selected to the National Museum of Racing’s Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor in 2017. He serves as chairman of the Museum’s Hall of Fame Historic Review Committee.


The 149th running of the Travers is Saturday, Aug. 25 at Saratoga Race Course. The race is a Grade 1 with a $1.25 million purse. The field is expected to include Haskell Invitational winner Good Magic, Queen’s Plate winner Wonder Gadot, Jim Dandy winner Tenfold, Curlin winner Hofburg, Wood Memorial winner Vino Rosso, Belmont Stakes runner-up Gronkowski and Haskell runner-up Bravazo, among others.
