Week Three: People Behind the Scenes

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The third and final installment of this summer’s Guests in the Gallery series will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 24 in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame Gallery.

The panel will consist of people who work behind the scenes in racing:

Richard McCarthy, trackman for Equibase. McCarthy is the chart caller for all of the NYRA races. He records the position of every horse at the different points of call and writes the comments that appear at the bottom of the official charts.

Marshall Cassidy, a placing judge for the Saratoga meeting. Cassidy, was the track announcer for NYRA for many years before he retired. A placing judge records the order of finish in a race. Cassidy also is on call as the backup announcer.

Joe Campbell, a farrier at NYRA tracks. Campbell has a private business and also works in the paddock for NYRA on race days.

Bill Gallo, Director of Racing for the National Steeplechase Association.

Guests in the Gallery programs are free with paid admission to the Museum, which is located at 191 Union Avenue, directly across the street from Saratoga Race Course. The program runs from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Museum admission fees are Adults - $7, Seniors and Students - $5, and Children age 5 and under - free. For more information, call (518) 584-0400.
