Laurin is best known as the trainer of Riva Ridge and the mighty Secretariat, but his career in Thoroughbred racing began much earlier. He won 161 races as a Canadian jockey, including the 1935 King's Plate aboard Sir Michael. In 1942 Laurin began his training career in New England. For Reginald Webster he claimed Quick Touch, producer of stakes winners Sorceress, Capelet, Count Amber, and 2-year-old champion Quill, all trained by Laurin. Laurin also trained for A.B. Hancock Jr., but reached the pinnacle of his success with Christopher Chenery's Meadow Stable. Between Meadow Stable's champions Riva Ridge and Secretariat, Laurin won 5 of 6 Triple Crown races in 1972-73.
