Jimmy Jones worked with his father Ben Jones training their own horses and working for Woolford Farm until 1939 when they moved to Calumet Farm. Under the direction of the Jones boys, Calumet Farm was leading owner 12 times and leading breeder 14 times. Jimmy Jones later followed in the footsteps of his father by becoming Calumet Farm's head trainer. Although the two trained many champions together, Jimmy was the trainer of record for 7 champions, including Triple Crown winner Citation.

Jimmy Jones was America's leading trainer for five seasons. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1959.
