Ben Jones trained from 1909 through 1953. He is the trainer of record for
eleven champions and trained several more with his son Jimmy
Jones.
Jones began his training career racing his own horses on the bush tracks of
the West and Mexico. He earned a reputation as a trainer of fast 2-year-olds
and ranked among America's leading breeders and owners during the 1920's.
In 1931 Jones became private trainer for Herbert Woolf. For Woolf, he
conditioned three champions and won the first of six Kentucky Derbys,
beginning with Lawrin in 1938.
In 1939 Jones took over as trainer for Calumet Farm. Under his direction
Calumet Farm produced Triple Crown winner Whirlaway and eight other champions.
Ben Jones retired in 1946, but in 1952 he returned with a division of Calumet
horses and topped the trainer's list a fourth and final time. Jones died in
1961 at the age of 78.

Jones' first three champions were conditioned for Herbert Woolf. The
remainder were Calumet horses.

Ben Jones was the nation's leading money-winning trainer for four seasons. He
was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1958.
