Ussery was born in Oklahoma and began his riding career with Quarter Horses. At age 16 he took his first Thoroughbred mount to victory in the Thanksgiving Day Handicap at the Fair Grounds. Bobby Ussery was a leading rider in Florida and in New York where he rode a then record 215 winners. His best season came in 1960 when he led all jockeys in stakes purses won.

In 1960 Bobby Ussery rode champion juvenile colt Hail to Reason and piloted Bally Ache through victories in the Preakness, Flamingo and the Florida Derby. His 1967 Kentucky Derby win on Proud Clarion was another major win.

Ussery was among the top money-winning jockeys for nine seasons and among the top winning riders for six. When he retired from racing he was the sport's fifth-leading money-winning rider. Robert N. Ussery was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1980.
