Jimmy Stout rode primarily in the 1940's and 50's and brought home winners 15.6% of the time. He began his career as a stable boy and received his first mount from trainer Charles Miller. Five years later Stout's contract was purchased by trainer James "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons. Stout and Fitzsimmons were a winning combination. Two of Stout's three Belmont wins, aboard Granville and Johnstown, were on horses trained by Fitzsimmons. Stout rode for Fitzsimmons for eleven years and considered him an important influence on his riding career.

Stout piloted Hall of Fame horse Johnstown to victory in the 1939 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, but considered 1936 Horse of the Year Granville his best mount. He also rode Hall of Fame horses Assault, Omaha, and Stymie, and winners Pasteurized, Count Arthur, and Fenelon. In addition to his Belmont Stakes wins, Stout won the Kentucky Derby, 2 Jockey Club Gold Cups, and 2 Brooklyn Handicaps. One of Stout's most memorable races was the historic triple dead heat in the Carter Handicap of 1944. Stout was aboard Bossuet; Eric Guerin rode Brownie; Gayle Smith was on Wait a Bit. In 1946 James Stout left Fitzsimmon's stable to ride in his home state of New Jersey where he was leading rider for four years. After leaving the saddle in 1954 he worked as a racing official. James Stout was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1968.
