Don Brumfield rode for 36 years and brought home winners 14% of the time. He won his first race in 1954 at Monmouth Park and won his first stakes aboard Duc de Fer. Both mounts were trained by his father.

Brumfield rode the Kentucky circuit for most of his career and earned numerous racing titles there. Nineteen sixty-six was one of his best years; he won the Kentucky Oaks on Native Street, followed a day later by his Kentucky Derby win on Kauai King. He also won the Preakness with Kauai King.

Don Brumfield rode a number of excellent horses including champions Forward Pass, Gold Beauty, Our Mims, and Old Hat. He was also aboard Alysheba when he broke his maiden at Turfway Park.

Don Brumfield still retains the all time win record at Churchill Downs by a wide margin. He was known as an honest but aggressive rider and was honored for his integrity when he received the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 1988. Brumfield was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1996.
