Johnstown competed for two years and won two-thirds of his races. His career earnings of $169,315 do not seem high by our standards, but were substantial in his day. In his first season Johnstown won the Breeders' Futurity, Remsen Handicap, and Richard Johnson Stakes.
Johnstown defeats Sun Lover in the Dwyer ©Keeneland-Morgan
Johnstown's most successful season came at 3 when he won the Wood Memorial, followed a week later by the Kentucky Derby. In the Derby he defeated Horse of the Year Challedon by eight lengths. Johnstown followed his Derby win with victories in the Belmont, Withers, and Dwyer Stakes. After his racing career, Johnstown was retired to stud at Claiborne Farm in central Kentucky. His success as a sire was mixed. He produced only six stakes winners out of 227 foals; however, in the mid 1950's he was a leading broodmare sire. Johnstown was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1992.
