Imp began her career in Ohio and Kentucky racing in weekly sprints that usually brought her a paycheck but no lasting fame. After winning four consecutive races at 4, she was shipped to Chicago. By the time she won 10 out of 11 starts, her owner was ready to head east. At 5, Imp finally earned lasting fame as the first mare to win the Suburban Handicap. She also won the Brighton Handicap after giving nine pounds to champion Ethelbert. At 6 she won the Advance Stakes by 30 lengths and set an American record for 1 3/4 miles.

When she retired at 7, Imp had raced an astonishing 171 times. She set records at 1 1/16, 1 1/4, 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 miles and defeated the most important colts of her era. Imp was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1965.
