Man o' War is one of the best known horses of this century. He was bred by August Belmont II and sold at the Saratoga yearling sales for $5000 to Samuel Riddle. Riddle's new colt had been sired by Fair Play out of the mare Mahubah, by Rock Sand. Hall of Fame trainer Louis Feustel conditioned Man o' War.In a career that lasted two seasons, Man o' War lost only one race, to Upset in the 1919 Sanford Stakes. Highlights of Man o' War's 2-year-old season include victories in the Hopeful and the Futurity.

At 3 Man o' War won all his races. Eight were won in record time, one under 138 pounds, and one by 100 lengths. He won the Dwyer, Preakness, Belmont, Travers, and Jockey Club Gold Cup. Man o' War also defeated older champion and Triple Crown winner Sir Barton in a match race at Kenilworth Park in 1920.
Man o' War's lifetime earnings of $249,465 were a record for his time. He then went on to a successful career at stud. He sired 64 stakes winners and was the leading sire of 1926. Man o' War's offspring included champions War Admiral, Scapa Flow, Battleship, Crusader, American Flag, Maid at Arms, Bateau, Florence Nightingale, Edith Cavell, Maryland Hunt Cup winner Blockade, and champion show jumper Holystone. Man o' War was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1957.
