Gallant Fox was America's second Triple Crown winner and holder of a single-season earnings record that was not surpassed for 16 years. In his first season Gallant Fox won the Flash Stakes and the Junior Champion Stakes. Sensing his colt's promise, Woodward brought Earl Sande out of retirement to ride Gallant Fox at three. Under Sande's excellent hands, Gallant Fox began his championship year by winning the Wood Memorial by four lengths, the Preakness and the Kentucky Derby (in that order), and then the Belmont Stakes by three lengths.

After winning the Dwyer and the Arlington Classic, Gallant Fox was defeated in a historic upset at the Travers by Jim Dandy, a 100-1 shot. Recovering quickly from the loss, Gallant Fox then won the Saratoga Cup, the Lawrence Realization, and the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Gallant Fox was retired at the end of his second season. He was the only Triple Crown winner to sire a colt, Omaha , who could match his feat. Gallant Fox also sired 1936 Horse of the Year Granville , as well as Ascot Cup winner Flares. Gallant Fox was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1957.
