Majestic Prince was bred by Leslie Combs II of Spendthrift Farms and sold to Frank McMahon for a record $250,000. He was a chestnut colt sired by Raise a Native out of the mare Gay Hostess, by Royal Charger and foaled in 1966. Majestic Prince was trained by Hall of Fame jockey John Longden.

In his best season at 3, Majestic Prince came close to being the first Triple Crown winner since Citation in 1948. He won the Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby, Preakness, San Jacinto, San Vicente, and Los Feliz Stakes.

Majestic Prince outdueled Arts and Letters in the Derby and the Preakness but lost the Belmont to his arch rival by 1 1/2 lengths. He remained in training but never raced again.

After his racing career ended Majestic Prince was syndicated and stood at the Kentucky nursery of his breeder, Leslie Combs II. Majestic Prince sired 32 stakes winners, including Majestic Light and Coastal.

Majestic Prince was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1988.
