In the Woodward Stakes, Damascus won by 10 lengths over older champion Buckpasser and 3-year-old rival Dr. Fager. Damascus' final victory of the year was in the two-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup. After winning virtually every major race at 3, Damascus was easily chosen Horse of the Year.
At 4, after losing the Suburban to Dr. Fager, Damascus beat his rival two weeks later in the Brooklyn. He then went on to win the William duPont and the Aqueduct. As a successful stallion Damascus sired 51 stakes winners, including Desert Wine and Highland Blade. Damascus was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1974.
