Commando lost only two races in his two year career. At 2 he won the Zephyr Stakes, the Great Trial, and the Montauk. He carried 125 pounds in the Brighton Junior and won by a head and later won the Junior Champion under 127 pounds. Commando's first loss came in the Matron Stakes when his rider saw no one threatening and eased his colt. Beau Gallant then breezed by on the inside.

At 3 Commando won the 1 3/8 mile Belmont, the Carlton, and then broke down in his third race. Commando was sent to Castleton Farm where he began a successful career as a sire. Commando's career at stud was too short. In four seasons he produced 10 stakes winners from 27 foals. They included champions Colin, and Peter Pan. In 1905 Commando cut his hoof on a rock, The wound did not seem serious but proved fatal when tetanus set in. Commando topped the sire list in 1907, two years after his death. Commando was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1956.
