Citation was the second homebred Triple Crown winner for Calumet Farm and the father/son training team of Ben and Jimmy Jones.Citation was the first horse to earn more than a million dollars and still holds the record for winning the most stakes races in a year, 17 in 1948. Hall of Fame trainers Max Hirsch, and Jim Fitzsimmons, and jockey Eddie Arcaro saw the best horses of several decades and called Citation the best ever.

Best 2-year-old of 1947, Citation's only defeat was by Bewitch, his stablemate. Citation won the Futurity Stakes, Pimlico Futurity, and Elementary Stakes that year.
