A homebred for Ernie Samuel’s Sam-Son Farm, Dance Smartly was a brown filly sired by Danzig out of Classy ‘N Smart by Smarten. She was trained by Jim Day and ended her career with a record-setting $3,263,835 in earnings. Dance Smartly began racing in Canada at two. Among her races that year was a victory in the Natalma Stakes and a third place finish behind champion Meadow Star in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Dance Smartly is best known for her undefeated three-year-old season. She had two victories in Canadian stakes and then won the Canadian Oaks by 4 ½ lengths. She then earned her place in racing history by becoming the first filly to secure Canada’s Triple Crown, winning the Queen’s Plate, Prince of Wales Stakes, and Breeders’ Stakes. The Canadian Triple Crown races range up to 1 ½ miles in length and test horses on both dirt and grass. She convincingly won this series by a combined margin of 18 lengths. Her streak continued with a victory over colts in the Molson Export Million and the defeat of older distaff champion Queena in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Dance Smartly was voted Horse of the Year in Canada and received an Eclipse Award as the best three-year-old filly in North America.
At four, Dance Smartly won the Canadian Maturity before retiring to Sam-Son as a broodmare. She has been very successful as a broodmare and was the first mare to foal back-to-back winners of the Queen’s Plate: Scatter the Gold in 2000 and Dancethruthedawn in 2001. Dance Smartly was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003.
