Gene Klein purchased Winning Colors from Echo Valley Farm and turned her over to D. Wayne Lukas for training. Following in the hoof prints of Regret (1915) and Genuine Risk (1980) she was the third filly to win the Kentucky Derby and the first Derby winner for trainer D. Wayne Lukas. With her strapping physique and catch-me-if-you-can style, Winning Colors was hailed as an 'amazon' after she routed a field of males by 7 ½-lengths in the Santa Anita Derby. But, she is best remembered for her brilliant and gutsy Kentucky Derby win. In the 1988 Derby she took command early to hold off champion Forty Niner.

In the fall of 1988 Winning Colors had two memorable duels with the undefeated older champion Personal Ensign. Winning Colors grudgingly lost by less than a length in the Maskette and lost by only a lip in the Breeders ' Cup Distaff.
Winning Colors' final season was marred by breathing problems and surgery. Still, she recovered her form enough to win the Turfway Budweiser Breeders' Cup. She retired with 8 wins out of 19 starts and was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2000.
