Black Gold's origins can be found in a vision. As Al Hoots lay dying, he had a vision that his mare, Useeit, would be bred to Col. E.R. Bradley's Black Toney and the resulting foal would win the Kentucky Derby. Several years later Al's widow bred the mare as predicted, and the foal, Black Gold, did go on to win the Derby. Black Gold had his best season at 3. As predicted he won the Kentucky Derby, but he also won the Louisiana, Chicago, and Ohio Derbys.

After racing for two years, Black Gold was put out to stud at four. When he was found to be sterile, he was returned to racing at 6 but found little success. Black Gold broke a leg while racing at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans in 1928. He was put down and then buried in the track's infield. Black Gold was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1989.
