As an undefeated 2-year-old, Bimelech won the 1939 Futurity Stakes, Pimlico Futurity, and Saratoga Special. After he won the Blue Grass and Derby Trial Stakes, Colonel Bradley believed he might have his best Derby colt in Bimelech. When Derby Day arrived, Bimelech was the overwhelming favorite. But in a stunning upset, he lost by 1 1/2 lengths to Gallahadion, a horse he had beaten in the Derby Trial.

Bradley found compensation for losing the Kentucky Derby when Bimelech rebounded a week later to win the Preakness and then the Belmont. Bimelech sired 30 stakes winners and was the broodmare sire of 50 stakes winners, including champion Porterhouse. Bimelech was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1990.
