Breeder John E. Madden provided two impressive colts, Zev and Grey Lag, to the well known Rancocas Stable. As the leading 2-year-old colt of 1922 and the best horse in America at 3, Zev earned his place at Rancocas. Zev had five consecutive wins at 2 including the Grand Union Hotel Stakes and the Albany Handicap. He was considered the best colt of 1922.

Zev set a single season earnings record at 3 by winning the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Queen's County, and Lawrence Realization. His defeat of Papyrus in a match race marked the first time a Kentucky Derby winner defeated an English Derby winner. When Zev retired he replaced Man o'War as racing's leading money earner. Zev sired two minor stakes winners, Zida and Zevson. Zev was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1983.
