A. Jack Joyner purchased Whisk Broom II from breeder S.S. Brown for $2,500 and then sold the colt to H.P. Whitney for the same price. Joyner maintained contact with the colt by being his trainer from ages 2 through 5 when he raced overseas. Whisk Broom II's American trainer was James Rowe Sr. The most notable of Whisk Broom II's European victories was the Victoria Cup, which he won at age 5 while carrying 128 pounds.

He won the Metropolitan under 126 pounds, the Brooklyn under 130 in track record time, and the Suburban under 139. As of 1996, 139 pounds remains the highest weight ever carried to victory in the Suburban. Whisk Broom II sired 26 stakes winners, including champions Whiskaway and Whiskery, as well as Preakness winner Victorian and Sanford winner Upset, who dealt Man o'War his sole defeat. Whisk Broom II was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1979.
