Sun Beau set a record for career earnings despite the handicap of having eight trainers in five years. For most of his career Sun Beau raced in the East and the Midwest where he won the Hawthorne Gold Cup three years straight. Sun Beau did not demonstrate his racing prowess until his second season when he won the Potomac, Latonia Championship, and Maryland Handicap. At 4 Sun Beau won the first of his three consecutive Hawthorne Gold Cups by defeating Misstep and Diavolo in a record setting 2:01 3/5 for 1 1/4 miles. He also won the Washington, Havre de Grace, and Aqueduct Handicaps.

Sun Beau's winning ways continued at 5 and 6. He won two more Hawthorne Gold Cups and won the Arlington Handicap under 128 pounds. Sun Beau held the career earnings title for nine years until it was surpassed by Seabiscuit. Sun Beau was not a particularly successful sire. He produced 6 stakes winners out of 134 foals. Sun Beau was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1996.
