Seattle Slew won the Champagne Stakes and was undefeated at 2. His winning streak continued at 3 with victories in the Flamingo, Wood Memorial, Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes. He was named Horse of the Year for 1977.

Seattle Slew suffered from a serious viral infection at 4 but returned to defeat younger champion, Affirmed, in the Marlboro Cup.

At 4 Seattle Slew also beat leading handicapper Exceller in the Woodward before narrowly losing the Jockey Club Gold Cup to him. Seattle Slew's final race was the Stuyvesant Handicap, which he won carrying 134 pounds.

After his racing career, Seattle Slew stood at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky. He was leading sire in 1984 and produced 12% stakes winners, including Slew o'Gold, Swale, Landaluce, Slewpy, Adored, and Seattle Song.

Seattle Slew was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1981.
