Northern Dancer's fine race record was only surpassed by his significance as a sire. He was the first Canadian-bred to win the Kentucky Derby, and he later sired 112 stakes winners. At 2 Northern Dancer's most important victories were the Remsen Stakes and the Coronation Futurity.

Northern Dancer's best season came at 3 when he won the Flamingo, Florida Derby, Blue Grass Stakes, Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Canada's prestigious Queen's Plate. He was also named Champion 3-year-old of 1964.
Northern Dancer stood at Taylor's stud farm in Maryland until his retirement in 1987. He sired Nijinsky II, winner of England's Triple Crown, as well as The Minstrel, Shareef Dancer, El Gran Senor, Secreto, and Fanfreluche. Northern Dancer was America's leading sire in 1971. Northern Dancer was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1976.
