Nashua was the first Thoroughbred sold for $1 million. Following the death of owner William Woodward Jr., Nashua was sold to a syndicate led by Leslie Combs II for $1,251,200. Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons was Nashua's trainer.

Highlights of Nashua's 2-year-old season included victories in the Futurity, Hopeful, and Juvenile Stakes. Nashua was then named Champion 2-Year-Old.

At 3 Nashua won the Flamingo, Florida Derby, Wood Memorial, Preakness, Belmont, Dwyer, Arlington Classic, and Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Nashua almost won the Triple Crown but was upset by Swaps in the Kentucky Derby. Later in the year he defeated Swaps in a 1 1/4 mile match race. Nashua capped the season by being named Horse of the Year.

At 4 Nashua raced under Leslie Combs II's colors. He won the Widener, Suburban, Grey Lag, Camden, Monmouth Handicap, and a second Jockey Club Gold Cup. Nashua retired with lifetime earnings of $1,288,565, a record for his time.

Following his racing career, Nashua was put to stud. Out of 636 foals, Nashua sired 12% stakes winners including Shuvee, Noble Nashua, Wickerr, and Diplomat Way.

Nashua was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1965.
