Genuine Risk was bred by Mrs. Sally Humphrey and sold as a yearling to Mrs. Diana Firestone for $32,000. Genuine Risk demonstrated she was worth her purchase price in a season of unbeaten races at 2. Her most notable victories were in the Demoiselle and the Tempted Stakes. At three Genuine Risk became the first filly in 65 years to win the Kentucky Derby. In this race she came from seventh place to take the lead after a mile.
Genuine Risk narrowly missed winning the other Triple Crown races. She lost the Preakness to Codex and the Belmont to champion Temperance Hill. In the fall she won the Ruffian Handicap and was later named Champion 3-Year-Old Filly. After many barren years, Genuine Risk produced her first foal in 1993. The foal was appropriately named Genuine Reward.
Genuine Risk was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1986.
