Holy Bull was bred by Mrs. Rachel Carpenter of Pelican Stable. He was a gray colt foaled in 1991 and sired by Great Above. Trainer Warren (Jimmy) Croll inherited Holy Bull and used Mike Smith as the Bull's regular rider.
Holy Bull was unbeaten at two. Among his best races were the grade I Futurity, in which he beat Dehere, and the In Reality Stakes. At three he won eight stakes out of ten starts, five of them grade I victories. He scored front-running triumphs in the Hutcheson, Florida Derby, and the Blue Grass Stakes. After defeat as the favorite in the Kentucky Derby, he defeated older horses Cherokee Run and Devil His Due in the Metropolitan Mile. Winning the Metropolitan placed Holy Bull on a six-race winning streak that included the Dwyer, Haskell, Travers, and Woodward, which he won with a five-length victory over Devil His Due and Colonial Affair. Holy Bull ended the season as champion 3-year-old male and Horse of the Year for 1994.
At four Holy Bull won the Olympic Handicap easily but was injured and pulled up during the Donn Handicap. In retirement, he stands at stud at Jonabell Farm in Lexington, Kentucky.
Holy Bull was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2001.
