Paseana was a grade I winner in Argentina who began her American racing career at four. During 1991 she began a seven-race winning streak that included five grade I races, among them the Santa Margarita, Apple Blossom, and Vanity Handicap. Able to carry weight, she won under as much as 127 lbs. Later in 1992 she won the Breeders' Cup Distaff by four lengths over Versailles Treaty at Gulfstream Park.
At six in 1993 Paseana won grade I races in three regions. She took the Apple Blossom in Arkansas, the Milady in California, and then moved east to take Kentucky's Spinster Stakes. At year's end she was nosed out by Hollywood Wildcat in the Breeders' Cup Distaff but this loss did not keep Paseana from winning an Eclipse Award as champion older female.
At seven Paseana won another Santa Margarita and the following year, at eight, added a victory in the grade II Hawthorne Handicap at Hollywood Park. All told, Paseana won 19 of 36 races, including 10 U.S. grade I stakes, and two Eclipse Awards.
Paseana lives at Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky, and is being bred to Skip Away in 2001. Another filly sired by Lode is living in Argentina. Paseana was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2001. |
