Ruthless was the first and the most formidable of five champion fillies sired by Eclipse out of the mare Barbarity. The others were Relentless, Remorseless, Regardless, and Merciless; the five were known as the Barbarous Battalion.
In 1866 Ruthless won the Nursery Stakes and defeated colts in an overnight race at Saratoga.
At 3 Ruthless won the Spring Stakes and then the following day defeated older colts in a 1 1/4 mile race. She also won the first Belmont Stakes, becoming one of only two fillies to win that race in over a hundred runnings of the classic.
Ruthless was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1975. |
