Reigh Count was bred by Willis Sharpe Kilmer and sold to Mrs. John D. Hertz, who struck gold in her purchase of the colt. He was one of her first acquisitions and the best in a crop that included Hall of Fame member Sun Beau.

In his first season Reigh Count won the Kentucky Jockey Club and the Walden Stakes.

At 3 Reigh Count easily won the Kentucky Derby, Miller, and Huron Stakes. He then beat older horses in the Saratoga Cup, defeated Preakness winner Victorian in the Lawrence Realization, and won the Jockey Club Gold Cup. At 4 Reigh Count was sent to England. He won the Coronation Cup and finished second in the Ascot Gold Cup.

At stud Reigh Count produced 22 stakes winners, including Count Fleet, America's sixth Triple Crown winner.

Reigh Count was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1978.
