John Veitch and Alydar

The son of Hall of Fame trainer Sylvester Veitch, John Veitch was born in Lexington, Ky., on July 27, 1945. He grew up around the track and served apprenticeships with his father and Elliott Burch, another Hall of Fame trainer. Veitch went out on his own with a small public stable in 1974 and by the time he retired in 2003 he trained four champions.

Veitch won 410 races (18.5%) from 2,340 starts and garnered purse earnings of more than $20 million. He won 76 graded stakes and 93 overall stakes races. A key figure in the revitalization of legendary Calumet Farm, Veitch also had success as a private trainer for another historic stable, Darby Dan.

Veitch’s champions were Our Mims (1977 Champions 3-year-old Filly), Davona Dale (1978 Champion 3-year-old Filly), Before Dawn (1981 Champion 2-year-old filly) and Sunshine Forever (1988 Champion Turf Male). He also was the conditioner of Hall of Famer Alydar, who finished second in each of the 1978 Triple Crown races to Affirmed.

With Alydar, Veitch won the Whitney Handicap, Blue Grass Stakes, Arlington Classic, Flamingo Stakes and the Travers (by disqualification). With Davona Dale, Veitch won the old and modern versions of the filly Triple Crown, capturing the Kentucky Oaks, Black-Eyed Susan, Acorn, Mother Goose and Coaching Club American Oaks.

Other notable victories for Veitch include the Spinaway Stakes, Matron Stakes, Turf Classic Invitational Stakes, Budweiser International, Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (3), Florida Derby (2), Delaware Handicap and the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes. He also won the 1985 Breeders’ Cup Classic with Proud Truth.

Veitch currently serves as the Chief State Steward for the Kentucky Horse Racing Association.

John Veitch was inducted into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2007.
